Looking Back at Opening Day
It’s hard to believe it’s already been over a year since we opened the doors at 118 Oliver Plunkett Street.
Opening day was a bit of a blur. There were boxes everywhere, shelves still being filled and plenty of last-minute jobs to finish before customers started arriving. Like any move, there was a bit of organised chaos behind the scenes.
Once the doors opened, though, it all came together.
Seeing familiar faces walk into the new shop alongside people finding Sandbox for the first time made all the work worthwhile.
A Bigger Home for Tabletop Gaming in Cork
Sandbox has changed a lot since we first opened.
As more people got into board games, Trading Card Games, Warhammer and Dungeons & Dragons, we quickly outgrew our old space. Events got busier, gaming nights filled up and we wanted somewhere people could stay, play and spend time.
Moving into the city centre gave us that opportunity.
The extra space meant more gaming tables, more events and room to stock a bigger range of board games, trading card games, miniatures and hobby supplies.
Built for Playing
The new shop wasn’t designed just to sell games.
We wanted somewhere you could sit down with friends, try something new and spend an evening without feeling rushed.
Every week you’ll find people playing:
- Board Games
- Magic: The Gathering
- Pokémon
- Disney Lorcana
- Warhammer
- Dungeons & Dragons
There are organised events most nights, but there’s always space for casual games too.
Looking Back
Opening day feels like yesterday.
Some of the people who came through the door that first afternoon are still in every week. Others came in out of curiosity while walking down Oliver Plunkett Street and ended up discovering a new hobby.
That’s been one of the best parts of moving into the city centre. People who never knew a place like Sandbox existed now drop in for a look, join an event or pick up their first board game.
Thanks, Cork
The support over the last year has been unreal.
Whether you’ve been with us since the Washington Street days, found us on Lower Glanmire Road or only discovered us after we moved into the city centre, thank you.
Every game played, every event booked and every recommendation to a friend has helped Sandbox grow.
We’re looking forward to seeing what the next few years bring.
If you haven’t visited yet, call in and see us on Oliver Plunkett Street. Whether you’re looking for board games in Cork, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Disney Lorcana, Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, or just somewhere to spend an evening with friends, we’d love to have you in.
